Hallmarks are your guarantee as the customer and provides you with a fineness mark (quality of metal), sponsor's mark (who it was made by), Assay Office mark (where it has been hallmarked) and optional marks such as a date letter which tells you the year it was stamped.

 

Currently, all Silver items over the weight of 7.78g, and any gold items over the weight of 1g must be hallmarked by law.
